“Toothache” usually refers to the sensation of pain around the teeth or jaws that may be an outcome of some dental problem, such as dental cavities (dental caries), a cracked or fractured tooth, an exposed tooth root, a worn tooth, or gum disease. Serious disorders of the jaw joint (temporomandibular joint) can also be one of the reasons for toothache.

The severity of a toothache varies from chronic and mild to intense and agonizing pain. The pain may worsen when you try to eat or drink, especially if you are consuming very hot or cold food and beverages. Toothache can spread to the entire jaw area, making it tender and sensitive. You may notice a slight increase in intensity of pain when you lie down, because of the increased pressure on the tooth.

Symptoms of Tooth Pain

      • Prolonged sensitivity to hot or cold foods without any recent dental treatment

      • Lingering or prolonged sensitivity to hot or cold foods after recent dental treatment.

      • Sharp pain when biting down on food

      • Constant and severe pain with pressure, swelling of the gum, and sensitivity to touch

    • Pain radiating from a single spot while touching in or near your mouth triggers a sharp, severe tooth pain lasting a few seconds.

Causes of Toothache

      • Dental caries.

      • Tiny tooth fracture.

      • Exposed root of the tooth – this can happen when the gums recede, exposing the underlying root.

      • Sensitivity – this can also be caused by gum-line recession or enamel abrasion, which leaves the sensitive areas of the teeth exposed

      • Dental treatment – sometimes after a cosmetic dental treatment, the tooth pulp may become irritated, leading to pain.

      • A periodontal abscess in the gum.

      • Sinusitis, which can lead to pain in the upper jaw.

      • Temporomandibular joint injury – this is the joint that connects the jaw to the skull.

    • Teething – New teeth can cause a lot of discomfort to your baby and this causes toothache
