Stained/Discolored Teeth

Discoloured Teeth

We all wish to have dazzling smiles with clean and healthy teeth for lifetime. Stained and discolored teeth can give make people feel embarrassed to show their smile and give them a very ugly appearance.

The most common causes of discolored teeth are as follows:

Age – With the age, our teeth get older and begin to appear darker. Nowadays, with the availability of cosmetic dentistry treatments, we can easily whiten teeth either in the surgery or using home whitening bleaching procedures.
Trauma - A blow to a tooth can cause the pulp to die and then the tooth can darken with time. To avoid discoloration of teeth, you can go for root canal filling treatment. However, if a tooth has been ‘dead’ for a long time, it is not easy to remove the strain.
Tooth decay – The very first signs of teeth damage are appearance of white spots or lines across the teeth. Slowly teeth turn into yellow, brownish color and once the decay turns into a cavity the tooth looks black or grey. As long as the decay has not progressed too far these discolorations can be treated by having a white composite filling matched to the tooth’s natural color.
Surface stains – With the passage of time, our teeth become stained by food items, particularly by smoking and drinking beverages such as red wine, black tea, frizzy cold drinks and coffee. Sometimes, it becomes really tough to remove these stains with brushing and flossing alone. For this, simple scaling and polishing procedures are required by cosmetic dentist to remove the stains in the majority of cases.
Congenital conditions – There are some congenital diseases that can give rise to discolored teeth. Commonly, these types of discolorations are associated with other features such as teeth that are poorly mineralized or unusually shaped. It is not easy to treat these kinds of teeth and eventually need a combination of various cosmetic dentistry treatments such as tooth whitening, crowns, composite fillings, and veneers.
